You Can Be Anything...

My family tried to instill values and concepts within me starting at a very young age. Luckily, the majority of these stuck with me.

Some of these values contained empathy, compassion, respect, kindness, etc. Some of the concepts were a variation of these values; others were completely different. I was taught to treat others like I wanted to be treated. I was taught to pick my battles. I was taught to keep my political and religious beliefs to myself.

However, the most important lesson I learned growing up was that I controlled my destiny. I had the choice of where I was going to end up in life. I had the choice of what I wanted to do with my life. I could be a doctor or a lawyer or a teacher. I could try to become president of the United States if that was what I wanted to do.

I, of course, was also taught that no matter what I did there were some things I couldn't be. I don't have the talent to be a singer so any dreams of being a singer are probably non - existent. But, as long as there is any natural way to accomplish something, then it is possible to achieve it.

People said that I couldn't pass EMT class. I proved them wrong.

People said that I couldn't pass Firefighter I. I proved them wrong.

People said I couldn't pass Trench Rescue. I proved them wrong.

People said I wouldn't get my bachelors degree. I proved them wrong.

I can do anything I put my mind to. I can do anything I choose to do. As Dr. Seuss said, I can steer myself in any direction I choose.
