The Coolest Job to My 4 Year Old Self

My daddy was a volunteer firefighter when I was a little girl. Some of my best memories from my childhood involved the fire department. I thought the fire trucks were cool. I loved watching the live burns and seeing my "uncles" put the fires out.

I was the little girl who played with firetrucks. I loved riding on firetrucks in the annual Christmas parade.

Part of me wanted to be a firefighter when I was growing up. Of course, it wasn't as widely accepted for females to be in the fire service then as it is today. But, I truly believed then that I could be anything I wanted to be (then again that was a concept my Granddaddy instilled in me).

When I was around 22 years old, I went to my local fire department and picked up an application to be a volunteer. Ironically, my dad had "retired" from the very same department months earlier as a volunteer. I was accepted in and went through my probationary period. I went through my basic EMT class, got licensed to drive the ambulance for the department. I was certified in trench rescue. I took Arson Detection for the First Responder. But, then I got pregnant with my now 13 year old. I had to go on medical leave, then I moved out of the run area.

When I was around 24 years old, I joined the local fire department where I moved to. I was finally riding solely on the fire trucks. I loved it. I went through my firefighting course. Then I got pregnant with my now ten-year old twins. I had to leave.

And I never went back. There was just not enough time in my life to volunteer. And there certainly wasn't any way that I could pass the physical test for a paid position.

I still miss it to this day. There are times I will hear the sirens of the fire trucks and begin to wish I was on them again. The little four year old me still thinks that being a firefighter is the coolest job ever.

But, the adult me thinks that chapter of my life has passed...

The above picture was my fire helmet that Chris gave to me for my birthday in 2004. I still have the helmet (I think it is still in storage) but I had to turn the leather front patch back in when I left the department.
