My Happy Place

In December 2008, we went to Louisiana for my husband to work on a bridge they were building. During the two weeks we were down there, I realized I really liked it. Now, I wouldn't say I loved it because at that time we were in a little place called Galliano. Almost anything was an hour away. We went back to Virginia for the Christmas holidays knowing we were going back in January for around six months. I understood why the company chose to put them in Galliano - it wasn't too far away from the job site. Now, I knew that we were all going to be down there for months straight. Who wants to eat out every day for months because you can't cook in a hotel room? So, while in Virginia, I did some research. I found a brand new extended stay type hotel opening in Houma. Now, Houma was an hour away from the job site. However, it offered them a full kitchen so they could cook real food rather than eat out every single day and night. We went ahead and booked three rooms for the crew (there was only 3 on the crew). When we got back to Louisiana in January 2009, it only took me a day to realize that I was in a place I had never been in before --

I immediately fell in love with Houma.... and New Orleans. Now, I had always loved the city of New Orleans. Even as a little girl my dream was to visit the city one day. And once I visited, there was no where else in the world I wanted to be. I fell in love with the food, the culture, everything.

In August 2010, my husband announced that we were leaving Louisiana so he could go to work in Maryland. I cried and cried. I hated to leave the one place I wanted to be. In December 2011, he told me that he wanted to take two weeks in Spring of 2012 and visit Houma and New Orleans. I was excited. I was happy. I spent the time between his announcement and the dates of our trip planning everything. Planning where I wanted to go, who I wanted to see, what I wanted to do.

My husband realized something on this trip. He realized that I did belong in Louisiana. It improved my attitude. I was less grumpy. I was genuinely happy. However, moving there right now is out of the question.

I am so ready to be back in my happy place.
