December Goals

First a recap of November's Goals. I did absolutely horrible last month.

November Goals
Fitness and Health
  • Do exercise program minimum 3 times a week
  • Lose 5 lbs.
  • Finish current challenges (squats, lunges, calf raises)
I failed horribly on all three of these. To be honest, I didn't work out at all in November.

Blog
  • Blog 3 times a week in this blog
  • Comment on blogs as I read them, not saving them for later.
I failed at posting on the blog. I did try to comment on others' blog posts as I read them.

Writing
  • Add 5 "prompt stories" or poems.
  • Finish NaNoWriMo.
I failed at both of these too. NaNoWriMo is 50,000 words; I only wrote 2,000. That was on Day 1. After that not a word. I just didn't have the time for creative writing.

Personal
  • Stay on top of my schoolwork (this is very important! My Masters program requires me to maintain a 3.0 GPA or be kicked out)
  • Read 2 of the books on the ARC list (that I am behind on).
I tried to stay on top of my schoolwork. My current GPA is a 3.84. I read 1 ARC book.

  • Add 5 movies to #23.
  • Add 5 bands to #26.
  • Watch 1 movie for #22.
  • Buy 4  nail polish (#86).
I watched one movie for #23 of my 101/1001 list {The Purge: Anarchy}. I did complete buying 4 nail polish for the month.

Now, on to December. Hopefully I won't be such a slacker this month.

December Goals
  • Do exercise program minimum 3 times a week
  • Lose 5 lbs.
  • Finish current challenges (squats, lunges, calf raises)
  • Blog 3 times a week in this blog
  • Comment on blogs as I read them, not saving them for later.

  • Read 2 of the books on the ARC list (that I am behind on).
  • Add 5 movies to #23.

  • Cook the amazing Christmas Day meal I have planned.
  • Actually follow through with the traditions we have planned to start (we are feeling like horrible parents because we have never really done traditions).
  • Attend the husband's work Christmas party.

Why I Wear Purple

There are days that will change your life forever. Marriage, births, career choices, deaths. But, there are other days that can change your life.

July 27, 2004 was one of those days for me. That was the day that I found out my granddaddy had pancreatic cancer. Hearing that killed me inside. I was a granddaddy's girl all of my life. And I wasn't ready to accept this diagnosis.

For weeks, I watched his physical health deteriorate. I watched as he emotionally declined. I watched as he fought for every day he could to be with those he loved.

I went to visit him on Saturday, September 11th. I sat on the floor beside his bed and we watched episode after episode of Game Show Network. He put his hand on the top of my head and rubbed my hair like he used to when I was little. For those brief few minutes, I could live back in the past. Back where everything is okay. Where Granddaddy was okay.

Just two days later, my life would change again. On September 13, my grandmother called me and told me that hospice had just left and he wasn't expected to make it much longer. I immediately found a sitter for my daughters and went to my grandparents' house.

Part of me wishes I had never walked into his room. But, part of me is glad that I did. I sat beside him and wrote every memory I had of him. From riding on tractors with him to fishing at the pond to digging up potatoes in the garden. I had my memories of watching Atlanta Braves baseball and him making me ham and cheese omelets. I had my memories of getting my first Polaroid camera. I had memories of sitting in his shop and building odd things with the scrap wood. I had my memories of him calling me to come stay with him while my grandmother was in New York because he didn't want to stay alone. I had so many happy memories.

I walked out of his room for just a few brief moments. Just long enough to talk to some family friends that had stopped by. By the time I returned to his room, he was gone. In just a few minutes a piece of my heart went missing.

My oldest daughter was six at the time. She was "Grandad's Girl" much like I was "Granddaddy's Girl". She spent just as much time there during her childhood like I did. I made the decision that she would not see him the last day. I wanted her memories to be the good ones. I wanted her to remember him as healthy and energetic and happy; not as the man I saw laying in the bed that day.

Pancreatic cancer took a lot from me and my kids. They took a wonderful man from us. In the weeks after his death and funeral, I researched everything I could on pancreatic cancer. I was lost and confused. How could we not have seen that this was coming? What did we all miss? I found the website for Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I immediately signed up to volunteer with my local chapter. I bought items from their store. I needed to do something, anything. Just to prove to myself that his death would mean something more than just a great life coming to an end.

My granddaddy needed a cure. But, there wasn't one. However, I hope that there will be soon. There needs to be greater pancreatic cancer awareness. There needs to be as much focus on this cancer as other cancers. Did you know that pancreatic cancer is one of the leading cancers causing death? Survival rate for pancreatic cancer is low.

Beginning today I will post a pancreatic cancer fact on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. I want to spread awareness for this devastating cancer not only for the memory of my grandfather but for the HOPE of all the others who have or will have this disease.

In April, I participated in National Poetry Writing Month. One of our writing prompts was to write a poem from the perspective of another person. I chose my grandfather.

The Lucky One

I have been watching over you
For almost ten years now.
I’ve been with you in all you do,
That was my dying vow.
My family has always had my love,
And now, you also have my protection.
With you, nothing else came above.
I was never one to show much affection,
For that I truly am ashamed.
In my heart each of you holds a special place,
And for my shortcomings, you should never be blamed.
I was blessed with your grace,
And your undying admiration.
I am in a better place,
But this is my final acclamation.
I will always take care of you,
Just as I’ve always done.
I now know what everyone always knew,
With all of you in my life, I was the lucky one.

I Wish I Was Great At...

 photo 67404366_zps4dabc66d.jpg
{Photo Credit}

What is the thing you most wish you were great at?

You know, I could very easily put something like singing or ballroom dancing. I can't do either and I have no natural talent that would suggest I even could do either. And really, neither of those things would improve me as a person.
However, I do wish I had the ability to manage my time. If you've been around here long, you know that I have a lot going on.

I homeschool my kids.

I am a graduate student in college.

I am a group leader for my girls' American Heritage Girls troop.

I am an aspiring writer.

I blog.

I read and review books for other authors.

I still have to be a wife and a mother.

I need time to work out.

You see? That's a lot to get done in one day. Especially when there is only 24 hours in a day.

I definitely need some time management skills so that I can feel accomplished at the end of the day. Every morning I wake up with these plans that I will accomplish my to do list for the day. By the time I'm getting ready to go to bed, there is not much checked off my list. I am getting frustrated.

Part of me thinks it's my own doing. Part of me thinks that I put too much on my plate. Part of me thinks that I expect too much out of myself.

One day I'll find that perfect balance and be able to achieve all I need to.

I am a quarter Italian, Bella means beauty in Italian, and this is a diary of sorts. So, The Italian Bella Diaries.

5 Passions

We all have things we are passionate about. Here are five things I am passionate about.

  • My kids. Do I really need to explain this one? My kids are my world and I would do anything I could for them. I want them all to be successful and happy in their futures.
  • Learning. I have an extreme passion for learning. I believe that there is always something we can learn everyday. My goal each day is to learn one new thing a day, no matter how big or how small.
  • Writing. I love to write and always have. I started writing when I was young and never stopped. Right now I have 17 WIP in various stages. I really hope I can finish them in the next few years.
  • Reading. This is another thing that I have always loved to do. I have always read for fun. That was part of why I closed my book blog for awhile. It became more of a job than reading for fun.
  • Psychology. I love psychology. I love to study psychology. I am so glad that I changed my majors to this one. I don't think I would be happy studying anything else but this.

My Dream Job

Right now, my dream job is a sports psychologist. Or at the very least a clinical psychologist. Luckily, I am in a psychology graduate program. I have about two years to decide which doctorate program I plan to enroll in.

Of course, I have wanted to own a restaurant for a couple decades now. So, maybe that is my dream job.

Or...

I have always wanted to be a best - selling author since I was a little girl.

But maybe, somehow, I can have them all.

Selfishly in the Shadows

I spent my entire childhood in the shadows of a sibling. And not an older sibling as it is normally. I spent my childhood in the shadows of my younger brother. No matter what I did, it was always overshadowed by his misdeeds. I got good grades; all anyone noticed was his bad grades. I got into the National Honor Society; his suspensions were more important.

Maybe I'm selfish. It's obvious that my brother was having some sort of problems to be getting suspended frequently and getting bad grades. But, at the same time I wanted someone to tell me great job for all the good I had done. I tried hard to be perfect. But, that's another story all together. But, looking back maybe my perfectionism was born from my desire to hear "Great job" and when I never heard it, I felt like I wasn't good enough.

I'm still that way when it comes to him. We are now 36 and 31. I graduated college with a Bachelors in Psychology. But, guess what overshadowed that? Him getting himself fired. Yep. I'm still the one trying to be perfect. I'm still the one trying to succeed. He's still the one who doesn't care about his life's direction. Yet, I can't get a congratulations. Instead, I get phone calls with "How's your brother?", "Heard from your brother?", etc.

Although, luckily I am at the age now where I am trying to accomplish goals for ME. I guess my success doesn't mean much to others. But, guess what? It means something, everything, to me. I graduated, with honors, from high school. I graduated college with a Bachelors degree. And I currently hold a 4.0 GPA in my Masters program. I'm proud of me. And in the end, that's all that matters.

I don't understand why I am having such difficulty with these goals. They are relatively easy. I just need to organize my time better.

I also achieved a few goals that I had not listed here. First, October 6th will mark one month without any soda. That was also on my 101/1001 list. I had always been drinking diet anyway, but I have gone this whole month drinking either water or lemonade.

Second, my weight loss goal for my 101/1001 list was 25 lbs. When I began my new lifestyle thing this month, I set a goal of losing 30 lbs by December 31st (average of 2 lbs a week). I have lost 5 lbs so far.

Training For Tuesday #1

tracytris

I'm new to the whole fitness thing so my goals this month are pretty basic.

1. Continue workouts minimum 3 times a week.

2. Complete the 30 day squat challenge.

3. Complete the 30 day Fitness Challenge (app)

4. Do 3 Circuits a day of the Seven workout (app)

My ultimate goal is to begin training for a 5k. My plan is to run one either next spring or fall. Right now I am working on my endurance to be able to run.

Review: Graze Box {August 2014}

This post contains an affiliate link.

For my post on Graze as a program, click here.

I only received one box in August.

1) El Picante: mini paprika breadsticks, jumbo salted corn, and hot chili peanuts {130 calories}
         This one was pretty good. I like spicy food so this one was great for me. I gave it a "like" rating.

2) Garden of England: mini strawberries, blackcurrants, and soft apple pieces {70 calories}
          This one was surprisingly good considering I didn't like the apples in the other snack. However, when paired with the strawberries and blackcurrants, they were pretty good. I gave this one a "like" rating.

3) Vegetable Power: black pepper cashews, spicy chickpeas, and edamame beans {140 calories}
          This was the one from this box that I thought I wouldn't like. Yet, I ended up liking this one. I gave it a "like" rating.

4) Toffee Apple: sticky toffee sauce with granny apple slices {80 calories}
           The toffee sauce was good. However, paired with the dried apple slices it was nasty. I couldn't even eat it all. I gave this a "trash" rating.

If you wish to sign up for graze, you can click here (my affliate link}. You will receive your first and fifth box free and you have no commitment to the program.

Determined to do This...

Back in October of 2012, I wrote this post talking about weight loss. I had changed my eating habits and had actually lost a good bit of weight. I was almost to my first goal and then one day I just quit. I don't why and I don't remember what I did to ruin my eating habits.

But, when I was making my 101/1001 list in June, I added a lot of health and fitness items on the list. I didn't decide to start working on them until the beginning of September. My first change was my diet. With the exception of two days since September 6, I have been grain-free, dairy-free, and white potato-free. I haven't missed it as much as I thought I would. I figured with me being Italian, I wouldn't make it without my pasta, but surprisingly, I am doing fine.

I also, for the first time in many years, added exercise to my daily routine. I usually try to do between 45 - 60 minutes of exercise a day.

Do I stick to this strictly everyday? No. I have had a cheeseburger and french fries. I have had a few slices of pizza. But, that has been it. And I noticed that I felt physically horrible after it. And I noticed that I didn't miss the crap as much as I thought I would.

I also haven't exercised every single day, but no less than 3 times a week. My goal is to be able to do it everyday without thought but 3 times a week is a good start.

It's tough sometimes because I am the only one who made these changes. The only one out of everyone in this family. Everyone else still eats the same old crap they did on September 5. But, you know what? That's fine. Because I am getting more healthy and fit everyday.

I have seen some loss on the scales since the 6th. I can't say for sure exactly how much since I weighed myself for the first time a week after I started. So, we'll just say that as of now, I have lost 5 lbs.+. That's 5 lbs in 2 and a half weeks. I guess I am doing something right.I can tell in my waist and various other places that there are positive changes happening.

I've got this, this time around.

Unstoppable
by: Fozzy (featuring Christie Cook)

Talkin' 'bout me, oh so softly, you say I can't explain
I'll make it happen, no distraction, you know I can't be tamed
One night could be a million, one chance is all I need
I will complete this mission, damn you, I will succeed

Away from my past because in my eyes, I can do anything,
Now watch me rise

You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable

Don't need your rules, I ain't no fool, I live by my own code
Spark the fire of my desire and make my dreams explode
I do just what I want to because I know it's right
Don't tell me I can't make it, won't die without a fight

Away from my past because in my eyes, I can do anything
Now watch me rise

You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable

One night could be a million, one chance is all I need
I will complete this mission, damn you, I will succeed
Away from my past because in my eyes, I can do anything
Now watch me rise

You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never break me, I'm unstoppable
You'll never shake me, I'm unstoppable

 photo emmy-rossum-in-cosmopolitan-magazine-october-2014-issue_1_zps93e97e87.jpg

I'm also a fan of sports magazines like NASCAR Illustrated, Sports Illustrated, The NFL Magazine. I also used to have a subscription to Everyday with Rachel Ray.

Hmmm... I really don't know. Maybe one of the many recipes, workouts, or beauty tips I've pinned recently.

3. What is your favorite celebrity to follow on Instagram or Twitter?

Any of the New Orleans Saints players. I follow them all on both platforms.

4. Is there one article of clothing no matter what the season you can’t help but love?

I wear my New Orleans tank tops year round. Of course, in the cooler months I'll wear a hoodie over them when I go out somewhere.

Depends what it is. Email comes a lot quicker and I have no patience.

Must See TV.... {Fall 2014 Edition}

I usually am not much of a TV watcher. Sometimes it's because the kids decide to monopolize the TV, other times its because my husband chooses to monopolize the TV. But, there are shows I enjoy watching.

Sunday

* Our Sunday is filled with the last races of the season (until November) and football.

* Once Upon A Time {8 pm EST; ABC; Although I usually have to watch it online the next day}

* Madam Secretary {8 pm EST; CBS; Again I usually have to watch it online the next day}

* Total Divas {9 pm EST; E!}

Monday

My Mondays seem pretty clear. Occasionally we will watch WWE Raw but not often.

* Dancing With the Stars {8 pm EST; ABC}

I like Dancing With the Stars and used to watch it religiously. My husband on the other hand does not like it. This year I am going for Michael Waltrip (with Alfonso Ribeiro being second).

* The Originals {8 pm EST; The CW}

Tuesday

 * NCIS {8 pm EST; CBS}

* NCIS: New Orleans {9 pm EST; CBS}

* Chicago Fire {10 pm EST; NBC}

* Chrisley Knows Best {10 pm EST; USA; I usually have to catch the repeat}

Wednesday

* Hell's Kitchen {8 pm EST; FOX}

* The Mysteries of Laura {8 pm EST; NBC; I watch it the next day on Hulu}

* Law and Order: SVU {9 pm EST; NBC}

* Red Band Society {9 pm EST; FOX; I watch it on Hulu the next day}

* Chicago PD {10 pm EST; NBC}

Review: Graze

Graze is a mail order service for snacks. Graze specializes in healthy snack alternatives to chips and candy. Each box is $6 per week (or at least mine are). I received my first box free through a promotion Graze was offering. I will also receive my fifth box free through the same promotion. They have two types of boxes to choose from: Nibble Box or the Calorie Counter Box. The Nibble Box is eligible to contain any of the over 90 snacks Graze has. The Calorie Counter Box contains only snacks that are 50 - 150 calories.

I opted for the Calorie Counter Box.

Graze allows you to rate products before or after you try them. For example, I do not like pistachios, so I went ahead and marked all pistachio snacks as "trash". This alerts Graze that I do not wish to receive those snacks in my box.

Graze has a 4 level rating system. "Trash": Do not like, "Try": It's Ok, "Like": I like it, "Love": I love it. I do rate my snacks after each box because I prefer to have boxes catered to what I like especially after I have tried the snacks.

I do have one dislike about Graze. In my boxes, I only get 4 packages in my box. If I want one package a day as a snack, I have to purchase two boxes a week.

Below is my first box:

1) Morning Energizer: cherries, pears, and walnuts {140 calories}
        I did not like this one and gave it a "trash" rating. It just did not taste very well together for me.

2) Key Lime Pie: lime infused raisins, sponge pieces, mini meringues, and green raisins {110 calories}
        I liked this one. It did taste similar to key lime pie. I gave this a "like" rating.

3) Tomato & Basil Pizza: mini tomato breadsticks, basil crunchini, and cheese flavored cashews {120 calories}
        At first,  I was going to give this one a "trash" rating. However, after the first bite, it wasn't that bad. I ended up giving this one a "like" rating.

4) Raspberry & coconut muffin: amaretti drops, raspberry infused cranberries, almond slices and coconut flakes {140 calories}
        This one was pretty good as well. I am not a fan of coconut flakes, but overall this snack was good. It did taste like a muffin without the flour part. I gave this one a "like" as well.

Graze allows you to pick which weeks you receive a box as long as you change your date by the deadline. There is no limit on how many times you can skip a box. I really like that feature.

In the future, I will be doing all boxes for a month in one post rather than one post per box.

If you wish to sign up for graze, you can click here (my affliate link}. You will receive your first and fifth box free and you have no commitment to the program.
